Location of the Sanctuary of Machupicchu

The Sanctuary is located on the left bank of the Vilcanota Urubamba River, the area where the Cutija ranch was located. The sanctuary is to the northeast of Cusco, and the distance between them is 108.5 kilometers (67 miles) by railroad from the San Pedro train station in Cusco to the Machupicchu train station in Aguas Calientes village. The Sanctuary is at 2,400 meters (7,824 ft), but the town of Aguas Calientes is at 2,100 meters (6,890 ft) above sea level, and Puente Ruinas station is at meters (6,562 ft). To the north is Huaynapicchu Mountain at 2,700 meters (8,802 ft). To the south is Machupicchu Mountain at 2700 meters at 3,050 meters (9,943 ft). To the east is the Putucusi Mountain at 2,650 meters (8,639 ft), and to the west is the Wiscacha, Viscachani or San Miguel Mountain at 2,800 meters (9,128 ft). The area of the sanctuary, according to Professor Fernando Astete, is about 9 hectares.
